Airway nitric oxide and psychological processes in asthma and health: A review
2014, Annals of Allergy, Asthma and ImmunologyCitation Excerpt :Direct secretion of some form of constitutive NO from epithelial cells by norepinephrine action also might take place, as demonstrated for the urinary bladder40 (Fig 1B). Stress or antigens also stimulate interferon-γ from T cells,41,42 which has been postulated to tonically stimulate iNOS activity underlying FeNO from healthy airways37 (Fig 1C). Other pathways could involve stimulation of NO through stress-induced mast cell release of vascular endothelial growth factor and subsequent stimulation of iNOS and eNOS43,44 (Fig 1D).
Nitric oxide and KLF4 protein epigenetically modify class II transactivator to repress major histocompatibility complex II expression during Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin infection
2013, Journal of Biological ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Thus, mycobacterial infection-triggered expression of iNOS/NO production assumes critical importance. Apart from the numerous functions attributed to NO in the cellular signaling, its role in antigen presentation has rather been context dependent, wherein NO can induce or inhibit antigen presentation depending upon the cytokine milieu (25–28). Nevertheless, the role of NO in regulating a crucial immunological process like IFN-γ-induced CIITA/MHC-II expression remains elusive.

2009, International ImmunopharmacologyThe complex role of iNOS in acutely rejecting cardiac transplants
2008, Free Radical Biology and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Another aspect worthy of consideration is the role of NO in immune cell function in acute cardiac rejection. In this context, NO is known to have significant immunosuppressive activity to down-regulate T lymphocyte proliferation as well as down-regulating T lymphocyte activation [131–138]. This action potentially confounds the general understanding of the totality of the role of NO derived from iNOS in acute cardiac allograft rejection.
